Terra

Terra by Altherr Désile Park, honouring the organic nature of clay through a design that merges pottery craft with refined industrial precision.

2020

Terra pays tribute to raw clay and its natural organicity. Positioned between craftsmanship and industrial production, the lamp honours the time, patience, and ancestral skill of potters. Its archetypal table-lamp silhouette becomes a quiet stage where light reveals three custom textures and the true character of clay—its colour, depth, and the malleability shaped by earth and water.

CRAFT MEETS INNOVATION

Pott Project is a Spanish artisanal lighting brand based in Totana, Murcia, specialising in handcrafted ceramic lamps that bring together traditional pottery techniques and contemporary industrial design. Their mission is to take artisan production to the next level without losing the human connection, touch, and accumulated knowledge that defines it. Working with Pott means accepting a productive tension: they challenge the industrial designer to think like a craftsman, and the craftsman to think like a designer.

Our Terra Light Collection is a tribute to clay as a raw material and its inherent organicity — a lamp that stands at the crossroads of craft and industrial production, conceived to honour the ancestral knowledge of potters and the time, patience, and particular rhythm that defines their practice. The starting point was intentionally archetypal: a timeless form that steps back to let the clay speak — light revealing its colours, textures, and natural malleability shaped by earth and water.

SYSTEM AND SURFACE

What the industrial design perspective added was not a singular shape but a system of components — combinable parts that allow each piece to be customised into a unique configuration. Three distinct textures define the surfaces of these components, each with its own making process and its own relationship to the hand. Light is what brings all three to life. It reveals the nuances of each texture — the depth of the marks, the grain of the clay, the subtle variation in colour that no industrial process could fully standardise.

The first texture is slightly rough, recalling clay in its natural, unworked state. The second carries a pattern of rectangular marks, sculpted by hand and then reproduced with a mould — a craftsman's gesture, replicated with knowledge and patience. The third textutre is an irregular rhythm of fine lines, first drawn by hand and then captured through 3D printing. Combined individually, each piece is the same, and each piece is different.

ARCHITECTURAL WARMTH

For Terra, we worked with the natural clay palette of the region — from white and pale beige through terracotta and rust to deep anthracite. Used alone or in combination, these tones create grounded, understated harmonies that enter into dialogue with the materials of the interiors they inhabit: plaster, stone, wood, concrete. Colour here is not applied; it is inherent to the material itself, variable and alive in a way that only a natural material like fired earth can be.

The components of the Terra collection extend across a wide range of applications. The base and shade elements of the table lamp become pendant lights in sizes ranging from a single small form to generous chandelier configurations, alongside wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted versions that offer a warmer material alternative to conventional spotlights. In spaces shaped by natural finishes and considered materiality, Terra provides light with the presence and warmth of an object made by hand.
