Bensh × Leland

THE GOOD LIFE, BROUGHT INDOORS
Modern workspaces are supposed to foster encounter and creativity — yet too often modular benching defaults to a design vocabulary of slim cushioning and a boxy feel. For Leland, we wanted to translate the slower, welcoming rhythm of rural Michigan into a work setting. How to speak to a rural identity and sense of belonging through furniture without recreating a literal countryside mood? The answer was not aesthetic forms but attitudes and feelings: inspired by the good life of the Great Lakes, where hardworking craftsmanship meets with the relaxed ease of a lakeside retreat.
For Leland, the "made for human moments" concept means comfort, trust, and ease. Bensh hits the middle ground between the functionality of a bench and the comfort of a sofa: more than a thinly upholstered benching system, Bensh combines the generous cushioning of a living room sofa with the practicality of a standard-height work seat. Familiar shapes and subtle gestures of care, resolved into a single piece.
A CONFIGURABLE SYSTEM
Spaces are not one-size-fits-all — and neither is Bensh. From small nooks to long architectural runs, we designed the system to be customised to almost any length, adapting to the specific geometry of a project without compromise. Two leg options extend the range further: a wood plinth leg for an architectural feel that lets Bensh dress up for upscale installations, and a powder-coated metal leg for a hardwearing urban edge. A configurable crumb gap makes cleaning effortless in dining settings.
Connector tables create angular configurations and endcaps for more structured layouts; Accessory tables offer quick touchdown surfaces for informal work or coffee. Simple to the eye yet carefully composed, the soft curves owe their comfort to the generosity of the foam beneath them. The backrest reads as calm and geometrically upright — a deliberate visual restraint that conceals an inner construction engineered for genuine, sustained comfort.
FROM PARK BENCH TO BOARDROOM
The art direction for Bensh connects each setting to a feeling of relaxed ease. We started by watching how people actually sit in everyday situations: short stops on wooden benches, a dinner shared around a table, the familiar ease of a diner booth, a park bench for watching people and the world. From there, we looked for each scene's equivalent in different work contexts.
An informal run without a backrest becomes the brief stop between meetings; a cluster of benches gathered around a table becomes a casual workspace; a longer configuration built in along a wall reads almost like a sofa in a waiting area or cafeteria. Wood base legs echo panelled walls; and metal legs shift the feeling towards looser and more casual — the same bench, translated into a different mood depending on what it is asked to remember.
